Jolene

One of my fave C&W geetar playing singers, Matraca Berg, kills on this Dolly Parton cover. Forget chirpy and maudlin; she slows it down, blues it up, with just the right amount of pleading and pathos in her rich voice. Nice arrangement, too. The addition of a mandolin is brilliant.

  1. OMG that’s good!

  2. It’s country pop, but Matraca adds layers that enrich that genre. She writes music as well, great lyrics. “Strawberry Wine” is her’s, another of my favorites and she sings it to absolute perfection.

  3. very nice cover, I’m a big fan of Parton’s original.

  4. Dolly has written some very good stuff, but I can only barely tolerate her syrupy voice or appearance, especially now that her multiple plastic surgeries have morphed her into a muppet. It’s always been hard for me to take her seriously, and covers of her songs are what I best like.
